Exuma Weather in July

Girl on a Beach

So what weather can you expect on your July vacation in Exuma?

As the calendar moves from June to July we are into the height of summer and also statistically, we are in hurricane season.  In the 20 plus years we have lived in Exuma I do not recall experiencing a hurricane in July, that problem is usually threatening in September.

Girl at Sunset

So back to the weather. Our temperature statistically shows highs of 87 degrees F ( 30 C) during the day and 78 degrees F (26 C) at night.  But, as a believer in global warming, and someone who has just experienced one of the hottest Junes on record, I suggest that you can add a couple of degrees to have us hovering around 90 F.

Swim Time

While June is statistically one of our wettest months, July offers us up to one inch of rain for the month.

Humidity has by now soared into the high nineties with a 13 knot breeze providing a little cooling effect.

Now to the good news !  The Ocean has really warmed and is now a toasty 84 F (29 C) degrees, Yippee !  So no excuses for missing that dip.

So July is on our doorstep, it’s going to be hot and humid, so keep hydrated,  loads of water,  loads of sunscreen.

So why not picnic on a soft sand Exuma beach, choose one with shade and exposure to the East to get that cooling breeze, and spend your day in and out of the Ocean till you become all wrinkly !…. Enjoy

Weather in June in Exuma

Beach Waves

As June looms on the horizon it is time to look at the average weather statistics for the month of June.

The daily temperature is usually around 86 degrees during the daylight hours and dropping to 77 degrees at night.

June statistically is one of our wetter months with as much as 2 inches. But, when you check the weather forecasts during June you may see forecast saying “70% chance of rain”. Before you reach for the umbrella be aware that what this means in reality is that there is a 70% chance that it will rain somewhere in the islands. If you have experienced tropical weather you will know that we often get rain in very local patches.  Rain in George Town, not a drop in Hartswell.

The humidity has been climbing throughout the year and now it is approaching 90%. So its not surprising that if you exercise we recommend you get an early start before the sun gets too high.

That humidity we just mentioned will be to some extent offset by breezes from the East at 13 miles per hour.  Enough to provide a cooling effect, but not enough to make swimming or kayaking difficult.

Now we come to the best news !   The Ocean temperature has reached 83 degrees !!

So now we see the adults cooling off with a gin and tonic or a beer as they sit in the shallows and work on their tan.

Exuma Weather in May

Wedding Pretty Molly Bay Exuma

As we glide into May in Exuma, let me tell you what we expect from the weather gods this month. May is one of our favorite months with comfortable temperatures and warm Oceans.

The temperature is hovering around 85 degrees F so don’t forget the sunscreen, especially when you  are on the beach. At night it will drop down to the mid seventies for a peaceful nights sleep.

May is one of the months when we can experience a total of an inch and a half of rain, but this seems to be less each year. When it does rain it is usually a short sharp downpour, with the sun returning minutes later.

May is not a favorite month for the windsurfing fans as our winds normally hover around 13 miles per hour, be aware that this refreshing breeze may deceive you into not applying the sun screen.

Perhaps the best news of all is that the Ocean temperature will be into the eighties, so you can just relax in the blue water and appreciate Exuma’s amazing beaches.

Have a great vacation.

Exuma Weather in April

Harbor View Exuma kayak

So as we move into April let me tell you what weather your Exuma vacation has in store for you. Weather records have been collected for many years and averaged so we can be sure that it will not snow this April in Exuma ! in fact we are seeing a trend for higher temperatures.

The average daytime temperature in April is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees centigrade) and drops to a comfortable 73 degrees at night.  So open windows and no need for air conditioning.

The humidity is rising and April levels are expected to be around 61%, which is comfortable but does mean in my case that my daily walks move from an afternoon event to an early morning happening.

Rain is forecast to total one inch for the month. When you consider that rain in Exuma tends to be in short heavy amounts, it probably means it will rain about twice this month.

Winds in April average around 13mph from the east. Around twice during the month we may get stronger wind from the West. These tend to be remnants of storms off the east coast of the US. On those occasions a day with wind from the west will be followed by another blustery day with wind from the north, then 24 hours later it will settle down to an easterly breeze.   Great for those who live for Kitesurfing.

Perhaps the most important weather fact for those on vacation in Exuma, is the Ocean temperature. The good news is that it is expected to be at least 78 degrees.  So you can spend as much time as you like in the water.

Yearly Weather Pattern in Exuma

bonefishing in Exuma

I am often asked what the temperature is likely to be in July. Or which is the wettest month of the year. These are questions that form part of vacation planning, so I have set out below yearly weather pattern in Exuma that I hope will provide you with the information you need to be able to relax and enjoy your vacation in Exuma, hopefully with us at Harbour View

The first yearly weather pattern I will show you is the average temperatures in Fahrenheit.

average temperatures

As you can see the Exuma temperatures rarely drop below 70 F and rarely go above 90 F. So whenever you choose to travel to this beautiful part of the tropics, Exuma has warm weather to greet you.

The next Yearly weather pattern for Exuma I will show you is the second most asked. “Does it rain much that month?” or the other question is “I was looking at the weather forecast and I see that its says 20% chance of rain”.  If you do check the forecast you often see a percentage rain chance listed.

What you need to realize is that when its says 20% chance of rain that indicates that there is a 1 in 5 chance that it will rain somewhere in the area, and if you have any experience of rain in the tropics you will know that our rain is usually short and heavy and very limited in coverage. Its not like rain in Europe where it can be gentle rain all day over a vast area. It’s a common occurrence to have a 5 minute downpour in George Town then drive home and find they have no rain at all.

So here is the yearly weather pattern in Exuma for rainfall:

yearly rainfall

Your first reaction may be to think ..avoid end of May early June.  But statistically most rain comes in short sharp local downpours so when the temperature is in the nineties you might be grateful for a cooling shower. Just don’t let the sandwiches get soggy!

As for the October hump, that is in hurricane season, so some years its three times that amount, then others it’s around zero.

Humidity Levels

The next yearly weather pattern in Exuma that I will look at is humidity. The amount of moisture in the air.

Wind Speed

The next yearly weather pattern for Exuma  illustrates why our busy season is December through May.  It also illustrates why visitors in July and August spend most of their time in the Ocean or on  a beach.  August can be the month when many Bahamians take their vacation and go off island, they become reverse snowbirds ! Fortunately the effects of the high humidity are offset by the effects of the next subject we will look at, the wind.

exuma yearly humidity

As you can see from the wind chart it is usual to have a light  breeze, usually from the East. The benefit from the breeze is to dissipate some of the heat and to deter mosquitoes.  Occasionally the wind, as shown in the chart, will get up to around the 20 mph and thats when the kite boarders and windsurfers will be in their element.

Ocean Temperatures.

The last yearly weather pattern in Exuma I  show you is another factor which is important to people on vacation. The temperature of the Ocean water.

Yearly Ocean temperatures in Exuma

I think the chart is self explanatory but I would add that if you want to spend a lot of your time in the water in January, February or December, then you would be more  comfortable is a shortie wetsuit.

So in conclusion I would stress that any time is a good time for a vacation here in Exuma. Admittedly we do have a hurricane season but the months you should take seriously are mainly September and to a lesser extent October. That is the peak time for hurricanes and I would not advise you to choose those months because it’s also the time when many businesses close for maintenance.

We have experienced nearly twenty years of delight in Exuma and we strongly recommend you add it to your bucket list. And if you do make it a reality we hope you will consider Harbour View as your base. We promise to afford you total privacy, but with the knowledge that if you havea question, or want advise, we are just a door bell away…. Welcome
